Sometimes we are traveling so fast by car that we miss out on the really neat "stuff." When was the last time you were on a bicycle? When we first moved to Venice, this is how we learned about our neighborhood. More recently, this is also how I discovered Shamrock Park. From Route 41, take Shamrock Boulevard and watch for the sign for Shamrock Park - it is right at a curve in the road. There is a great jogging/walking path, tennis and basketball courts, and a really neat playground that all ages will enjoy. This park uses natural means of pest control so if your kids are allergic to pesticides, they can enjoy themselves here.
One thing that is real helpful if you are going on a tour (even if it is just your own neighborhood) is a Venice street map. You can obtain one free from the Chamber of Commerce or almost any real estate agency. Other businesses who advertise on the map may have signs saying "free maps". You will be amazed at how many interesting things you will discover "just around the corner." This is your chance to see the area from a whole different perspective. I definitely recommend sticking to either side streets or streets with bicycle lanes. (That covers a lot of territory.) Another mode of touring that is great for the grandkids is renting roller blades. (We are safer on the bikes). Bike rentals are available from numerous locations. If you havent been on a bike for years - take short trips and most important bring a supply of drinking water. If your balance isnt what it used to be - why not try a three wheeler. Bike and roller blade rental stores also have the proper safety equipment such as bike helmets and wrist guards. |
