At today's Planning Commission meeting, Planning Commission Chair (and CQG member) John Osmulski announced that he will be running for Venice City Council, Seat 2. That's the seat that Rick Tacy currently holds. Tacy has so far not announced if he will run for re-election, although if he runs and wins, Tacy would be forced to resign after one year due to a nine-year term limit.
Political outsider Gary Budway has also announced his intention to run. Budway ran for council last year and carried less than 4% of the vote.
Osmulski has run once for council, this in 1997 when he lost to Janice McDermott. McDermott carried 52.6% of the vote in that election..
Osmulski's biggest obstacle will be trying to woo a control growth electorate after chairing the city's Planning Commission for several years.
By the same token, Budway will have to shake off the appearance of being an outsider electoral loser from last year's election.
Venice Florida! dot com doesn't look at either of these two early entries as particularly strong candidates in the long electoral run between now and November.
